"Exquisite Tragedy is a comedy that tackles some heavy issues that especially affect the queer and more particularly, the non-binary community, discussing acceptance, and growth. I wrote this piece specifically because I, as a non-binary artist, I have never seen a character that is explicitly written to be non-binary. I have spent most of my life as a creator being disappointed and anxious that I do not ‘fit in’ the idea of who’s stories we (the general theatre community) wanted to tell. Even when I was cis I always felt othered, by my race, by myself and my peers. However, things changed when I realized I could create the stories that I wanted to tell. I can tell the stories that I feel are missing. Therefore, this play is my attempt at giving a voice to a community that I belong to, and that has been ignored for such a significant part of (at least) my life.
Exquisite Tragedy is my love letter to myself. The version of myself that was too afraid to be honest, too scared to be explicitly and unapologetically myself. So, to that young kid who didn’t understand the feelings they had, blamed themselves for the things they could not change, this is for you, I love you, and I hope you’re proud of where you ended up.
Enjoy the show, and all my love,
Tan Neeno"

This piece was devised as a group. Many women and men were interviewed to either discuss their lives as women, or their relationships with women. This piece was one that the creators were passionate about, and worked incredibly hard to interview, write, and perform the piece.
